Actionplus Foundation (UK) was set up in 1997 and operates in the London Bouroughs of Southwark and Lambeth. It is located just south of the River Thames. Both Bouroughs share similar characteristics. They have a high African population and both Boroughs have a high incidence of HIV. We have a long and trusted relationship with residents and health services in each of the boroughs which allows us to provide advice, support and education at the heart of the community.
Our current priority in the UK through the Take Action Now Empowerment Programme is to promote active participation to benefit communities most affected by HIV. Volunteering is the heart of this initiative which will enable us to run a regular outreach and education service.
Our UK service focuses on developing the skills, knowledge expertise on HIV and related health issues, working with people from the African Community in South London where we run a regular Community Leaders Training Programme.
The training programme is competence based and gives participants detailed knowledge of HIV infection looking at it from a medical and social point of view. 3 weekends and 3 evenings and take about 40 hours to complete and requires dedication from those who take part.
Once they graduate from the course we then develop a programme of outreach and education activities targeting the places where African people socialise including churches, community centers. night clubs and nail bars.
